Arranging decimals in order and multiplying and dividing

One of the main advantages of decimals is that it is straightforward to determine which of two decimals is bigger.

If we have two decimals, the one with the bigger number in the first decimal place is the bigger number.

If the first decimal is the same, the one with the bigger number in the second decimal place is bigger.

If the first and second decimal places are the same, the one with the bigger number in the third decimal place is bigger, and so on.

So,

0.64 < 0.65

If we want to compare numbers with different numbers of decimal places, then we put extra zeroes at the end of the number with fewer decimal places.

For example, suppose we wanted to compare 0.85 and 0.853.

0.85 = 0.850, so we compare 0.850 with 0.853.

3 is bigger than 0, so 0.853 > 0.850, hence

0.853 > 0.85
