Hectares

The hectare is a unit which is useful for measuring large spaces which are many thousands of square metres in size. The size of farms, for example, is measured in hectares.

The symbol for hectare is ha. One hectare (ha) = 10 000 square metres (10 000 m2). One hectare is roughly equal to 1 football ovals. A hectare in the shape of a square would have sides which are each 100 metres long. A hectare does not necessarily need to take the form of a square, though. Any shape which occupies 10 000 square metres is a hectare of space.
