Suppose that we have an equation containing the variables a and b.

If we transform the equation so that we get

a = some combination of b

then this is called making a the subject, we have found an equation in which a is by itself.

If we have an equation with several variables then making one of them the subject means that we have to transform the equation so that that pronumeral is by itself.
