Europeans felt it was their duty to colonise other countries
Colonies provided an opportunity for Europeans to spread Christianity

Ancient civilisations expanded their empires by conquering other lands
The ancient Assyrian Empire was at its peak around the 8th century

The Persian Empire was the largest the world had ever seen
The Greek Empire was made the largest in the world by Alexander the Great
Rome conquered Greece in 146 BC
The Roman civilisation expanded from the city of Rome
The Roman Empire extended from England to Palestine

Modern colonising countries included Portugal, Spain, France and Britain
The 'discovery' of America in 1492 started the new age of exploration
The first European explorers were the Spanish and Portuguese
Brazil was the main colony of Portugal
The Spanish Empire had important colonies in the Americas
Spain competed with other European countries such as France and Britain
France's colonial empire began in 1605 when it settled in Canada
The British Empire was the most extensive empire in world history
Britain had colonies in all continents of the world
