Chapter 1 :
Religion in Medieval Europe
By 1050, the Roman Catholic Church had become the most powerful institution in western Europe
Since only church leaders had access to a Bible and could understand Latin, people were unable to question the teachings of the Church
Christians went on pilgrimages and the wealthy also made donations to the Church
Since clergymen were among the few educated members of society, many advised the king and worked as teachers
The Church was responsible for the operation of a number of church courts
Some Medieval Europeans were followers of Judaism, or Islam, and some believed in ancient Greek and Roman gods
Chapter 2 :
Medieval origins of parliament
The witenagemot was an advisory council to the king between the seventh and eleventh centuries
Introduced to England by King William I in 1066, the Curia Regis replaced the witenagemot
King John of England was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215, to stop him from ruling unfairly
Simon de Montfort led the way for the formation of the modern representative parliament
King Edward I followed de Montfort's idea of representative parliament which included knights and burgesses
In 1295 the 'Model Parliament' was held, but it would undergo many changes before coming to resemble modern English Parliament
Chapter 3 :
Medieval origins of common law
In Medieval Europe, there were village courts, manor courts, church courts and the king's court
Early Medieval courts were usually run according to trial by ordeal or trial by combat
King Henry II set about trying to restore royal authority after much of it was lost to the Church and the nobility
King Henry II made royal justice available to all of England by allowing the king's court to travel to hear cases
In 1166, King Henry introduced the Assize of Clarendon, formally establishing trial by jury
