The use of energy resources
Topic : The use of energy resources
In this topic you will learn...
Chapter 1 :
The global issue and differing perspectives
Natural energy resources are renewable or non-renewable
The top three resources for energy are oil, natural gas and coal (fossil fuels)
Fossil fuels create pollution, are non-renewable and are not sustainable
Nuclear energy is a non-renewable energy resource alternative to fossil fuels
Renewable energy resources include wind, solar energy, water, biomass (plant material)
Renewable energy can cost more and produce less than some other energy resources
Chapter 2 :
Government responsibility and action
Individuals and groups often have a short-term view on the use of ocean resources
Government officials are responsible for implementing plans and enforcing laws
Government have an economic responsibility to safeguard their resources for the long-term
The Kyoto Protocol offers ways to reduce pollution emitted from fossil fuel consumption
The production of energy efficient cars is supported in Thailand
US Congress is debating whether to drill for oil in Alaskan wilderness areas
Chapter 3 :
Individual and group action
Greenpeace International promotes public awareness and often holds peaceful protests
Some car companies are investing time and money into more energy efficient cars
Some car companies produce large vehicles that consume a lot of non-renewable energy
The WBCSD is developing and implementing ways for businesses to be energy efficient
Bill Gates has invested money into ethanol-based energy research
Chapter 4 :
Social justice, equity and ecological sustainability
Large, developed countries are mostly responsible for the consumption of fossil fuels
Small, developing counties and Indigenous communities are most vulnerable to pollution
Nuclear power (also non-renewable) is being considered as an alternative fuel source
A socially just result would be for all countries to reduce their consumption of fossil fuels
An equitable process would require developed countries to lead the way towards renewable energy
